Vancouver Island Vanguard: Printmaking from 1980 – 2000

Alcheringa Gallery (now Mark Loria Gallery) is proud to present a survey of Indigenous printmaking from 1980 to 2000. This historic print exhibition focuses on Vancouver Island-based artists, whose innovative work has made a resounding impact on contemporary art of the Northwest Coast. This time period is often considered the golden age of printmaking, one in which innovation and storytelling beautifully melded together to create some of the iconic graphics we have come to recognize today.

The design of many of the prints have a sense of movement and flow, creating the feeling that these are not hand-crafted prints but snapshots taken on traditional territories. A figurative and anthropomorphic element to many of the prints create a strong feeling of personal connection, personal histories, and personal stories.

Selected artists featured in the exhibition included Temosen (Charles Elliott) there’s the late Delmar Johnnie Seletze, from the Cowichan area, and the late Kwakwaka’wakw artist Mark Henderson, from Campbell River.

The exhibition is thanks to collaboration with private collectors, and the families of the artists.
