Calvin Hunt, (1956) is the youngest son of Kwagu’l Hereditary Chief Thomas Hunt, and Emma, the daughter of a great Mowachaht Chief and Shaman, Dr. Billy, from Yuquot (Friendly Cove). He is also the grandson of renowned carver Mungo Martin and grandmother, Abayah. In 2004 Calvin was inducted into the prestigious Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and honoured with the BC Creative Achievement Award for Aboriginal Art in 2009.
Calvin Hunt’s first solo exhibition was a momentous display of carvings including masks, Power Boards and a small totem pole. Calvin’s inspiration draws on his 47 years of carving and the incredible amount of research and knowledge of traditional culture. Pieces like Sea Monster Transformation mask, Sisiutl, or Tlingit Dance Wand, are unlike anything unlike anything seen before, and contain both an approachability and emotional gravitas.
This exhibition took 18 months to complete, and focused largely on stories, songs, and inspiration from family and friends.
